Sunan Maulana Malik Ibrahim

Sunan Maulana Malik Ibrahim or Makdum Ibrahim As-Samarkandy (also known as Syeikh Maghribi) was an Uzbek who arrived in Java in 1404 and worked at Gresik and Leran until his death in 1419. He was also popular to the commoners as Kakek Bantal He founded the first Islamic school or pesantren in Java. He was a brother to Maulana Ishak a scholar of Samudra Pasai. His work was carried out before the time period normally associated with the Wali Sanga, making him a kind of pioneer for missionary activity on Java.

Ibrahim and Ishak were both sons of a Persian Ulama called Maulana Jumadil Kubro who resided in Samarkhand. It is strongly believed that Maulana Jumadil Kubro was the tenth generation of Hussein bin Ali (grandson of Muhammad).[1]

Maulana Malik Ibrahim once settled in Champa (nowadays Cambodia) for 13 years since 1379 A.D. He married a princess and beget two sons Raden Rahmat Sunan Ampel and Sayid Ali Murtadha (aka Raden Santri). In 1392 A.D he migrated to Java Island leaving his family behind.

He started his new life with small business by opening a small shop selling things with cheap prices and greatiously treated sick people in the community. He taught people of new techniques in agriculture and accepted people of lower castes outcasted by Hinduism.

As years passed Maulana Malik Ibrahim was laid to rest in 1419 A.D in Gapura, Gresik, East Java.
